HCG
HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone composed of two noncovalently linked subunits (alpha and beta chains). It is naturally produced by the human placenta during pregnancy and belongs to the glycoprotein hormone family, which also includes LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).
In laboratory research, H.C.G. is widely studied for its role in endocrine signaling, gonadal function, and metabolic regulation. It binds to the LH/CG receptor (LHCGR), stimulating the production of steroid hormones, primarily testosterone and progesterone, in experimental models.
Because of its complex structure and potent endocrine effects, H.C.G. serves as an important research molecule for exploring reproductive biology, pituitary-gonadal axis function, and metabolic hormone regulation in vitro and in pre-clinical models.

Endocrine and Reproductive Biology Research
- H.C.G. is extensively studied for its LH-like effects in stimulating steroidogenesis and gonadal function in animal and in-vitro models.
- Used to explore mechanisms of testicular Leydig cell activation, ovarian follicle maturation, and progesterone synthesis.
- Provides insight into pituitary-gonadal feedback regulation and receptor binding kinetics via the LHCGR receptor pathway.
Cellular Signal Transduction Studies
- Engages the G-protein–coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling cascade, leading to adenylate cyclase activation and cAMP generation.
- Enables mapping of hormone–receptor interactions and intracellular signaling mechanisms associated with endocrine regulation.
- Useful for studying phosphorylation-dependent activation of transcriptional factors involved in steroid biosynthesis.
Placental and Embryonic Development Research
- Serves as a model for investigating placental hormone synthesis and embryo–maternal communication in reproductive biology research.
- Allows examination of trophoblast differentiation, angiogenesis, and placental metabolic adaptation mechanisms.
Metabolic and Lipid Mobilization Pathways
- Used in pre-clinical settings to explore lipid metabolism, energy expenditure, and hormonal cross-talk between adipose and endocrine tissues.
- Provides researchers with data on hormone-mediated regulation of nutrient utilization under varying metabolic conditions.
Tumor Marker and Oncology Research
- H.C.G. and its β-subunit are often overexpressed in certain malignant tumors, such as choriocarcinoma and testicular cancers, making it a biomarker of interest.
- Supports research into hormone-driven oncogenic signaling, tumor progression, and diagnostic biomarker development.
Immunomodulatory and Anti-Inflammatory Studies
- Investigated for its ability to modulate cytokine expression and immune cell activity in reproductive and systemic contexts.
- Used to explore immune tolerance mechanisms at the maternal–fetal interface and in autoimmunity models.
