Epitalon (also known as Epithalamin or Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide composed of the amino acid sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It was first discovered and isolated by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as a synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring pineal peptide Epithalamin.
Epitalon functions as a bioregulatory peptide that has been shown, in preclinical research, to influence telomerase activity, gene expression, and cellular longevity mechanisms.
It is primarily studied in the context of aging biology, oxidative stress, and circadian regulation, where it has been observed to modulate pineal function, enhance melatonin secretion, and promote genomic stability through effects on telomere elongation and DNA repair processes.
Epitalon’s compact four-amino-acid structure and its role in epigenetic regulation and antioxidant pathways make it a cornerstone molecule for modern gerontological, endocrine, and molecular longevity research.

Structural Highlights:
Mechanism of Action
Epitalon’s primary mechanism in research appears to involve the upregulation of telomerase, the ribonucleoprotein enzyme responsible for maintaining and elongating telomeres at the ends of chromosomes. By restoring telomerase activity in aging cells, it supports DNA stability, genomic integrity, and replicative lifespan extension in vitro.
Epitalon is also shown in experimental models to modulate pineal gland function, particularly melatonin synthesis and circadian rhythm regulation, thereby influencing hormonal balance and oxidative homeostasis. At the molecular level, it appears to enhance expression of key antioxidant enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase) and modulate gene expression linked to stress resistance and apoptotic signaling pathways.
